Where are All the Wing Chun Kung Fu Fighters?
By Sifu John Clayton
We have Red Boat Wing Chun, Fatshan, Buddha Hand, Modified Wing Chun, Original Wing Chun, Wing Chun Kuen, Traditional Wing Chun and Wu Mei Wing Chun. It is spelled Ving Tsun, Wing Tsun and Wing Chun. All in all it is Wing Chun Kung Fu. Regardless of what lineage it comes from, it's Wing Chun Kung Fu "a superior or effective martial art."
I, Sifu John Clayton, held the first Inter-school Wing Chun Toumament, held in Baltimore MD in 1988, in which four schools came. These schools included Sifu Michael Milatanos' Wing Chun from New York, Buddha Hand Wing Chun from New York, Philadelphia Wing Chun and my school, the Maryland Wing Chun Academy. We also had various karate and kung fu fighters. I ran a forms division for beginning, intermediate and advanced competitors. There were Dahn chi sao, chi sao, point fighting and full contact fighting with championship belts given. The Maryland academy won the lightweight and heavyweight full contact division and Sifu Milatanos won the middleweight division.
Now, Sifu Anthony Goh and Grandmaster Huang hold the largest kung Fu tournaments on the east coast, with over 500 competitors every year. I still do not see other Wing Chun fighters competing in the sparring. Now they allow chi sao competition. A separate division only catered to Wing Chun. Where are the Wing Chun Fighters? You want to be recognized, seen by all? You want to show your art? Come Out! Compete! You have nothing to prove, but to make your instructor and your lineage stand out. Show yourself. Wing Chun needs you, the competitors, to be acknowledged with all of the Wing Chun Practitioners worldwide.
